What Is Colonche?

Colonche is a traditional dish from northern Manabí. It’s made with grilled green plantain and river shrimp.

It’s usually served with a rich peanut sauce, fresh herbs, and sometimes rice on the side.

This comforting stew blends earthy, smoky, and nutty flavors in one unique bite. And this is one of those delicious dishes that was a pleasant discovery.

The History Behind Colonche

Colonche comes from areas like Cojimíes, San Isidro, and Pedernales in Manabí.

Its name comes from the Chongón-Colonche mountain range, which crosses Guayas, Santa Elena, and Manabí.

Like many Manabí recipes, it uses green plantain, local seafood, and peanuts—staples of the coastal cuisine.

How to Eat Colonche

Eat colonche while it’s warm. Add rice to the mix of peanut sauce with the shrimp and plantain for maximum flavor.

Pair it with a fresh juice or a cold beer—it’s perfect for a relaxing weekend lunch or a cozy dinner.
