Guápulo Lookout Point: One of Quito’s Best Hidden Views
The Guápulo Lookout Point offers panoramic views of Quito and the surrounding valleys. From here, you can clearly see how the city blends colonial neighborhoods, modern buildings, and lush green hills.
The best times to visit are:
-
Early morning, when the city is quiet
-
Late afternoon, just before sunset
This viewpoint is ideal for photography, short walks, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment away from the city center.
At the lookout point, an informative panel highlights why this spot is so special. Sitting at around 2,800 meters (9,186 ft) above sea level, the Guápulo viewpoint has long been a strategic and cultural observation point connecting Quito with the surrounding valleys. This was the route Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana took towards the Amazon. The panel explains the historical importance of Guápulo as a route between the city and the eastern territories, as well as its close connection to the Church of Guápulo, which has played a central role in local religious and cultural life for centuries.
The word Guapulo has Chibcha origins, meaning GUA = large and PULO = potato.
The Church of Guápulo: History and Architecture
The Church of Guápulo, officially known as Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guápulo, is one of the most important religious sites in Quito. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the church features Baroque and Mudéjar elements, colonial paintings, and ornate altars.
The church remains an active place of worship and is especially important during local festivities and pilgrimages. Even a short visit gives insight into Quito’s colonial past and religious traditions.
