Helsinki Slow Living Guide: Best Things to Do, Eat, and Experience in Finland’s Calm Capital

Some cities encourage you to rush from one attraction to another. Helsinki does the opposite.

Finland’s capital welcomes visitors to slow down, breathe deeply, spend time in nature, enjoy a sauna, and appreciate simple pleasures. During our stay, we found Helsinki to be one of Europe’s most relaxing cities, where modern design, green spaces, waterfront views, and cozy cafés create the perfect environment for slow living.

Whether you’re looking for cultural attractions, Finnish food, architecture, or simply a slower pace of travel, Helsinki offers a refreshing alternative to many European capitals.

Getting Around Helsinki: The Easiest Way to Use Public Transportation

Helsinki is one of the easiest European capitals to explore without a car. The city has an efficient network of trams, buses, metro lines, local trains, and ferries that connect all major attractions.

We recommend downloading the HSL app (Helsinki Region Transport) before your trip. You can purchase tickets directly in the app using a credit card or mobile payment and access route planning in real time. Depending on your itinerary, you can choose single tickets or day passes.

For attractions like the Sibelius Monument, Temppeliaukio Church, and Oodi Central Library, public transportation is convenient, but Helsinki is also incredibly walkable. One of the joys of visiting this city is slowing down and exploring on foot between neighborhoods, parks, and waterfront areas.

Tip: The same HSL ticket covers trams, buses, metro, commuter trains, and ferries within the selected zones.
